The science keeps catching up with what yogis have known for thousands of years. A new study from Arizona State University found a clear link between yoga and longevity, and it’s one of the strongest results yet for a mind-body practice.
What Arizona State University Found
Researchers at Arizona State University followed more than 55,000 U.S. adults for about nine years. They compared 21 popular wellness and alternative health practices, from acupuncture to massage to homeopathy.
Only two were linked to a meaningfully lower risk of death:
- Yoga: 27% lower risk
- Pilates: 36% lower risk
The link held up after the researchers accounted for income, exercise, smoking, BMI and overall health. That matters, because it means the benefit wasn’t simply explained by people who do yoga being healthier to begin with.

A Link, Not Proof, But a Powerful One
This kind of study shows an association, not cause and effect. Still, when tens of thousands of people are followed for nearly a decade and yoga keeps standing out, it’s worth paying attention.
Why Yoga Supports a Longer, Better Life
In my practice, yoga is more than movement. It’s breath, posture and conscious awareness working together to heal the body and steady the mind. Each of these supports health in its own way:
- Breath: slow, steady breathing calms the nervous system and eases stress.
- Posture: mindful movement builds strength, balance and flexibility as we age.
- Conscious awareness: training attention inward helps us notice tension, pain and habits before they take hold.
Done consistently, that adds up to more than a longer life. It’s a better one.

Start Where You Are
You don’t need an hour a day to benefit. Your mat is waiting, and even 15 minutes today counts. Begin with a few rounds of slow breathing, a handful of gentle postures, and a few quiet minutes of awareness at the end.
