The recent travesty in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, sent shockwaves throughout a small and tightly knit mountain community. The 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar shot and killed two members of his family before committing the school shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. In total, eight lives were lost with Jesse himself committing suicide. Two dozen others were injured, most of whom were children.

The aftermath of the event has seen the town unite in great pain and remorse. Vigils were held, and hundreds of community members gathered in the main square under the light of candles, sharing tears, silence, and tales of the tragic loss. One man described the town of Tumbler Ridge as “one big family,” emphasizing the need for support and unity during this extremely difficult time. Flowers, stuffed animals, and photographs have become a form of memorial as the townspeople find space for healing amidst the painful event.
These are reminders of the fragility of life and of our shared humanity. For those who are touched by such tragedy, support from those who love us, guidance from those wiser than us, and support from community resources are key. And for all of us, it can be a quiet reminder of the importance of kindness, of reaching out to those who may be withdrawing, of listening without judging, and of being fully in the moment.
A regular practice of self-care, whether through breathwork, movement, or awareness, won’t solve all problems. It may not prevent tragedies or keep us from facing hardships, but it will cultivate a solid groundwork of calm, awareness, and strength to help us cope during our most difficult life situations.
To the people of Tumbler Ridge, the grieving families, survivors, and all those touched by this loss, know you are not alone. May comfort be found in shared memories, community strengths, and enduring love. May peace settle over those young hearts forever changed.
I follow the basics – relax, train daily, breathe, reduce stress, love those around you, and make the most of life as it is.
